Bowl Projections 12/2/19

Last week, it looked like we might not have enough bowl eligible teams, but some underdogs like Boston College and Kent State pulled through to get to 6 wins. There are 79 bowl eligible teams for 78 spots. I'm projecting that Liberty gets left home, as an independent with no set tie-ins.

Peach: Ohio State vs. Utah
Fiesta: LSU vs. Clemson

My playoff projection remains the same. Ohio State and LSU should be in no matter what, and I lean towards Utah getting the last spot over Oklahoma if they both win this weekend.

Rose: Wisconsin vs. Oregon

I have no clue whether Penn State or Wisconsin will get the Big Ten's Rose Bowl bid- it likely depends on the margin of the Big Ten title game. I would lean towards the Badgers, especially after Penn State's lackluster performance against Rutgers.

Sugar: Georgia vs. Oklahoma
Orange: Alabama vs. Virginia

There's a chance that Alabama falls far enough for either Florida or a Big Ten team (say, Penn State) to get this bid, as it goes to the top Big Ten/SEC/Notre Dame team not already selected.

Cotton: Penn State vs. Memphis

Penn State was ahead of Florida in the most recent rankings, but the Gators were more impressive last week and may have passed the Nittany Lions, which would give them this bid. Memphis will be in the Cotton Bowl with a win- if they lose to Cincinnati, my guess is the Bearcats get the bid over Boise State or Appalachian State.

Citrus: Minnesota vs. Florida
Outback: Iowa vs. Auburn
Gator: Indiana vs. Tennessee
Holiday: Michigan vs. Washington

It's unclear how many teams the Big Ten is going to get into the New Year's Six (either 2 or 3) and how many the SEC is going to get (either 3 or 4). That is going to have a large trickle down effect on these bowls in particular, as there's strong restrictions about which Big Ten teams can make which games.

Liberty: Kansas State vs. Texas A&M
Redbox: Illinois vs. California
Sun: Wake Forest vs. Arizona State
Military: Miami (FL) vs. Navy

The ACC bowl bids are a complete mess- it's anyone's guess which 6-6 or 7-5 teams end up in which games. I've provisionally slotted Wake Forest and Miami here.

Arizona: Wyoming vs. Southern Miss*
Belk: Virginia Tech vs. Mississippi State
Alamo: Baylor vs. USC
Camping World: Notre Dame vs. Texas

Notre Dame is easy to slot into the Camping World bowl as the top ACC team, and this would immediately be the premier non-New Year's Six bowl.

Music City: Florida State vs. Kentucky
Texas: Oklahoma State vs. Cincinnati*
Pinstripe: Pittsburgh vs. Michigan State
Independence: Louisville vs. UCF*
Cheez-It: Iowa State vs. San Diego State*

I've given some Power Five bowl opponents to top Group of Five teams, as opposed to giving these slots to the leftover C-USA and MAC teams.

Quick Lane: North Carolina vs. Western Michigan*
First Responder: Eastern Michigan* vs. Florida Atlantic
Hawaii: BYU vs. Hawaii
Dollar General: Miami (OH) vs. Georgia Southern
Armed Forces: Appalachian State* vs. Air Force

The Big Ten is not going to fill this bowl slot, and this would create an interesting cross-country Group of Five game.

Birmingham: Boston College vs. SMU
Potato: Utah State vs. Ohio
Bahamas: Buffalo vs. Charlotte

The Bahamas Bowl is the first set matchup of bowl season, as Charlotte has booked their ticket to their first bowl game in school history.

Gasparilla: Temple vs. UAB
Frisco: Western Kentucky* vs. Kent State
Boca Raton: Tulane vs. Central Michigan
New Orleans: Louisiana Tech vs. Louisiana
Camellia: Toledo vs. Georgia State
Las Vegas: Washington State vs. Boise State
New Mexico: Nevada vs. Marshall
Cure: FIU* vs. Arkansas State
