Bowl Projections 12/8/19
These are my final bowl projections of the season. The playoff and New Year's Six picture has largely been decided, but many conferences still have plenty of uncertainty about their bowl picture. Only one bowl eligible team will be left home, and I project it to be Toledo.
Peach: LSU vs. Oklahoma
Fiesta: Ohio State vs. Clemson
There's no doubt about the identity of the four playoff teams, the only question now is seeding. I feel pretty good that LSU is going to get the #1 seed after their demolition of Georgia, which would send them to the Peach Bowl.
Rose: Wisconsin vs. Oregon
Sugar: Georgia vs. Baylor
Orange: Florida vs. Virginia
Cotton: Penn State vs. Memphis
The first question in the New Year's Six is who goes to the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin put up a good enough showing against Ohio State that I think they beat out Penn State for the Rose. The second is who goes to the Cotton Bowl. It'll come down to Penn State, Utah and Auburn. My guess is that Utah falls far enough and Penn State stays ahead of Utah to put the Nittany Lions here.
Citrus: Michigan vs. Alabama
Outback: Minnesota vs. Auburn
Gator: Indiana vs. Texas A&M
Holiday: Iowa vs. USC
Indiana to the Gator and Iowa to the Holiday makes a lot of sense given the Big Ten's rules about no repeat teams to bowl games. Slotting the Citrus Bowl is harder, but I figure that they can't pass up the allure of a Michigan/Alabama matchup.
Liberty: Iowa State vs. Tennessee
Redbox: Illinois vs. California
Sun: Pittsburgh vs. Arizona State
Military: Miami (FL) vs. Navy
Most of the ACC bids are anyone's guess. I've heard some buzz about Miami to the Military so I've slotted the Hurricanes here, but I wouldn't be surprised to see four or five other teams in their spot.
Arizona: Wyoming vs. Arkansas State
Belk: Virginia Tech vs. Mississippi State
Alamo: Oklahoma State vs. Utah
Camping World: Notre Dame vs. Texas
This feels like a pretty safe bet for the Camping World now- Notre Dame is all but locked in and this would immediately become the marquee matchup of the pre-NY6 slate.
Music City: Florida State vs. Kentucky
Texas: Kansas State vs. Cincinnati*
Pinstripe: Wake Forest vs. Michigan State
Independence: Louisville vs. UCF*
Cheez-It: San Diego State* vs. Washington State
With two Big 12 teams in the NY6 instead of two Pac-12 teams, now it's the Big 12's slot in the Cheez-It which is likely to be open. This makes it likely that we'll have two Mountain West/Pac-12 matchups this bowl season.
Quick Lane: North Carolina vs. Western Kentucky*
First Responder: Eastern Michigan* vs. UAB
Hawaii: BYU vs. Hawaii
Dollar General: Central Michigan vs. Louisiana
Armed Forces: FIU* vs. Air Force
Birmingham: Boston College vs. SMU
The ACC is in a rare spot of using up all of its bowl slots. I've sent Boston College to Birmingham as the lowest rated ACC bowl team, but UNC could end up here as well.
Potato: Nevada vs. Western Michigan
Bahamas: Buffalo vs. Charlotte
Gasparilla: Temple vs. Florida Atlantic
Frisco: Southern Miss vs. Kent State
Boca Raton: Tulane vs. Miami (OH)
New Orleans: Marshall vs. Appalachian State
I think it's possible that ESPN decides to move some things around and send Appalachian State to a better bowl than this, but ordinarily the Sun Belt champ ends up in the New Orleans.
Camellia: Ohio vs. Georgia State
Las Vegas: Washington vs. Boise State
New Mexico: Utah State vs. Louisiana Tech
Cure: Liberty* vs. Georgia Southern
Liberty has a deal with the Cure Bowl, and it looks like the American's bid will be unused, so I've slotted the Flames here.
Eligible but not selected: Toledo
