Bowl Projections 11/25/19

It was another bad week for teams on the cusp of bowl eligibility. 72 teams are now bowl eligible, with 78 spots available. There are 14 teams that need just one more win to make a bowl, and 7 of them are favored. However, one of them is Missouri, who is in the middle of appealing a bowl ban. I've projected that the 6 remaining favorites win their games and make a bowl, but there's a good chance we could see 5-7 teams in bowl games.

Peach: Ohio State vs. Utah
Fiesta: LSU vs. Clemson

It's hard to say what will happen for the final playoff spot if Utah, Alabama and Oklahoma all win out. I'm still guessing it would go to the Utes given Oklahoma's recent struggles, but if Alabama demolishes Auburn or Oklahoma demolishes Baylor, it could be a different story.

Rose: Penn State vs. Oregon
Sugar: Alabama vs. Oklahoma
Orange: Georgia vs. Virginia Tech
Cotton: Florida vs. Memphis

The biggest question for me in the rest of the New Year's Six is which Big Ten team goes to the Rose Bowl. It'll likely be Michigan if they beat Ohio State, but if not, it'll come down to Penn State, Wisconsin or Minnesota. I'll say the Nittany Lions get the edge over a 10-2 Minnesota team.

Citrus: Wisconsin vs. Auburn
Outback: Michigan vs. Texas A&M
Gator: Iowa vs. Tennessee
Holiday: Minnesota vs. Washington

The Big Ten has 6 legitimate top 25 teams, and slotting them into these games is tough. Minnesota probably deserves better than the Holiday Bowl, and Michigan technically shouldn't go to the Outback Bowl, but exceptions could be made.

Liberty: Texas vs. Kentucky
Redbox: Illinois vs. California
Sun: Wake Forest vs. Arizona State
Military: Pittsburgh vs. Navy

The ACC is going to end up with a ton of 6-6 and 7-5 teams. It's really anybody's guess who goes to which mediocre ACC bowls, I've tried to use geography and recent bowl appearances to make some of the calls.

Arizona: Utah State vs. Georgia Southern
Belk: Virginia vs. Mississippi State
Alamo: Baylor vs. USC
Camping World: Notre Dame vs. Oklahoma State
Music City: Miami (FL) vs. Cincinnati*
Texas: Texas vs. UCF*

Once again, it looks like the SEC is going to end up with tons of unfilled bowl slots. I've slotted some AAC teams into them, it makes more sense to have UCF and Cincinnati in these games then 6-6 Conference USA teams.

Pinstripe: Louisville vs. Indiana
Independence: Florida State vs. FIU*
Cheez-It: Iowa State vs. San Diego State*
Quick Lane: North Carolina vs. Michigan State
First Responder: Kansas State vs. Southern Miss
Hawaii: BYU vs. Hawaii
Dollar General: Central Michigan vs. Louisiana
Armed Forces: TCU* vs. Air Force

The Big 12 looks like the only power conference that could have more bowl eligible teams than slots. If TCU beats West Virginia and only 1 Big 12 team makes the NY6, there will be an extra Big 12 team looking for a home.

Birmingham: Florida Atlantic* vs. SMU
Potato: Wyoming vs. Miami (OH)
Bahamas: Eastern Michigan vs. Western Kentucky
Gasparilla: Temple vs. Louisiana Tech
Frisco: Charlotte* vs. Buffalo

Charlotte is going bowling for the first time less than a decade after starting their football program. Frisco has an at-large spot and feels like as good a spot as any for the 49ers.

Boca Raton: Tulane vs. Western Michigan
New Orleans: Marshall vs. Appalachian State
Camellia: Toledo vs. Georgia State
Las Vegas: Washington State vs. Boise State
New Mexico: Nevada vs. UAB
Cure: Liberty* vs. Arkansas State

Eligible but not selected: None
